Guide Right

Guide Right encompasses many of our youth oriented programs such as mentoring, college preparatory programs, and tutoring. However, the Flagship Initiative of the Guide Right Service Program is the Kappa Leadership Development League (Kappa League).

Guide Right is a program of the educational and occupational guidance of youth, primarily inspirational and informative in character. The purposes of the Guide Right Service Program is to place the training experience and friendly interest of successful men at the disposal of youth needing inspiration and counsel regarding their choice of a life’s career, and to arouse the interest of the entire community in the problems of youth as they seek to realize lives of usefulness.

Core Initiatives

STEM: Activities include getting involved with NSBE Jr, STE Career Fair, Utilize code.org for free programming training. Microsoft Retail stores offer free STEM training.

College Success: Mentoring for college. 90% Graduation Rate. Facilitate Undergrad/Alumni partnership for the mentoring College Prep Series Naviance an online tool to assist students in preparing for college; Diamonds in the Rough webinars (DITR); FAFSA Awareness; College Signing Day, recognizing graduating high school seniors going to college.

Positive Video Reporting – KLTV: Creating positive video recordings of Guide Right achievements.

History

Conceived in 1922 by Leon W. Stewart, and suggested at the twelfth Grand Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi®, Guide Right became the fraternity’s national service program. Leon Steward is the founder of the National Guide Right movement of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. and Past Western Province Polemarch. Soon after the St. Louis Alumni Chapter’s beginning in 1921, Leon W. Steward and J. Jerome Peters were assigned to research possible programs that would assist in developing the youth of the Black community and to devise a “meaningful and practical approach” to the problem of Black youth underachievement.

Ultimately, Brother Steward, proposed a program of guidance to be designated as Guide Right, with the purpose of assisting high school seniors to choose and pursue useful careers. The focus of Guide Right, from its inception, was to provide scholarships to needy and talented students, and to inform young people of the professions and other career options.

Demetrius Gresham serves as the Guide Right Director for the San Antonio Alumni Chapter. He is a man of many commitments, deeply rooted in his family, church, and community. He shares a loving 23-year marriage with his college sweetheart, Shiketa. Together, they nurture a vibrant family, including their two children, Joshua, (Sr. Kappa League) and and Lauren (Delta Gems). Demetrius is passionate about mentoring young men to step into their purpose and becoming leaders in their communities. This passion was developed through the men is his family and the Upward Bound Program which prepared him for college. Demetrius has been a mentor for Kappa League, Big Brother Big Sister, and other programs over the past 30 years.

Outside of his duties with Guide Right, Demetrius is a dedicated minister at Resurrection Baptist Church, where he works with the youth ministry. He is very involved with NSBE Jr. (The National Society of Black Engineers Junior Program of San Antonio) where he has taught programming, tutored math, and served as the parent coach for the rocketry team. He is currently coaching chess and acting as the the webmaster. He has also been recognized as Father of the Year twice with Jack and Jill of America, Inc. San Antonio Chapter. His life is a testament to the balance between faith, family, personal passions, and community service.
